Learning game dev as a hobby while keeping a stable career path

April 5, 2026r/gamedev

In r/gamedev, several threads converge on a pragmatic path: study computer science or IT for job security, learn game dev on the side, and treat game making as a passion project that can later become a pivot.

Do something like computer science, much better job prospects.
My 2 cents: study IT / computer science, and try to learn game dev as a pure hobby, without too much ambition or pressure on yourself.
From a personal experience, we are in a time that you can learn anything on the side, multiple things even.
IT, Art or marketing, just don't corner yourself in pure game development
I've made hacks for TTRPGs, text-based games in Inform 7, I made a 4x city building type game in Google Sheets.
