Translunar injection go and burn

April 3, 2026Jeff Foust, The Launch Pad, Phil Metzger

Multiple accounts highlight the go for translunar injection and the burn that sends Orion out of Earth orbit, emphasizing it as a precise, high-stakes maneuver that commits the crew to lunar distance.

"Houston is go for TLI," or translunar injection, Mission Control informs Artemis 2.
Mission Control has given the GO for the Translunar Injection (TLI) burn, the critical maneuver that will send the Orion spacecraft and its crew out of Earth orbit and onto a trajectory toward the Moon.
The level of trust in the technology by the NASA team is remarkable when you remember that the translunar injection burn must be just right to hit the exact spot where the Moon will be 4 days later
