Residency and fellowship selection fairness, IMGs, and citizen preference

April 7, 2026r/medicalschool

In r/medicalschool, viral threads argue over IMG-heavy residency programs and whether IMGs should have a separate match, while others claim programs prefer IMGs for harsher work expectations and fewer complaints.

There are tons of programs, especially in the northeast, that are >90% IMG.
I think IMGs should have their own match that takes place after normal match and SOAP.
Not trying to be nationalist but why should ANY non-USIMG get a competitive IM fellowship? (Cardio, GI, Heme/Onc, Pulm/Crit)
I don't think it is unfair to say there shouldn't be a single job given to a non citizen that a citizen wants and is qualified for.
some of these fellowships don’t want Americans with American work life expectations, they want IMG indentured slaves who will bust ass everyday all day
