Mpox care guidance, STI testing and transmission precautions

April 5, 2026r/AskDocs

In r/AskDocs, mpox is discussed with practical guidance emphasizing comprehensive STI screening and strict lesion precautions to reduce transmission during active infection.

Some important things about mpox:
Everyone with mpox needs a full STI test for chlamydia and gonorrhea (including swabs of the throat, anus, and urinary samples as applicable)
Everyone with mpox also needs a syphilis and HIV test (not usually part of standard tests)
No shaving while you have the lesions. Throw out that razor.
The lesions are contagious. Keep them covered if possible (pimple patches work) until they have crusted over, fallen off, and there is new skin growing back
